INTRODUCTION

I SAT IN THE beautiful main reading room of the Library of Congress, flipping through a decades-old copy of Life magazine. My project was to find the people, the stories, and the artifacts—protest signs, TV cameras, 1970s attire, cop cars—that could be re-created by the art department for a Vietnam War protest scene in a feature film I was working on. The film had a funny name, and my list of items to research was even more unusual—from ping pong tournaments in China to helicopters in Vietnam.
