Introduction
Bonus schemes provide cash payments to employees that are related to the performance of the organization, team or individuals, or a combination of two or more of these. Bonuses are often referred to as ‘variable pay’ or ‘pay-at-risk’.
A defining characteristic of a bonus is that it has to be re-earned, unlike increases that are consolidated into base pay and arise from individual contingent pay schemes such as performance- or contribution-related pay or pay related to service. Cash bonuses may be the sole method of providing people with rewards in addition to their base pay, or they may be paid on top of individual contingent pay.
