Scaling
So, your application has more users than it can handle. You will either scale up or scale out. With scale-up, we add more horsepower to our existing production boxes, and with scale-out, we add more production boxes. In both cases, we will have to buy more hardware and then deploy it.
Now, consider the scenario where the increase in the number of users to your website is temporary, such as a holiday season where you expect an exponential increase in user hits. If you buy more hardware then that hardware will not be optimally used post the holiday season.
