This glossary includes terms that are commonly used in ultrasonics and are used throughout this book.
Absorption (of sound): The dissipation or conversion of sound energy into other forms of energy, such as heat, either within the medium or attendant on a reflection.
Acoustical attenuation constant: The real part of the acoustical propagation constant.
Acoustical propagation constant: The natural logarithm of the complex ratio of steady-state particle velocity, volume velocities, or pressures either at two points separated by unit distance in a uniform system (assumed to be of infinite length) or at two successive corresponding points in a system of recurrent structures (assumed to be of infinite length).
