Psychology has been acknowledged as its own separate scientific discipline for around a century. The fun and games are widely considered to have kicked off around 1879, when Wilhelm Wundt, a German psychologist, established the first laboratory specifically for psychological research at the University of Leipzig.1 So, we’ve not been thinking about the brain scientifically for that long and what we’d consider modern advertising isn’t too dissimilar in age. In comparison to other ancient arts and sciences, formal psychology and advertising are the new kids on the block, so it’s not surprising that we haven’t got it all figured out yet.
