As part of preparing a virtual machine for use, you installed the VMware Tools. VMware Tools is a suite of utilities that not only improves the performance of a virtual machine, but also improves the user experience by providing capabilities that are not available without them. Without these tools installed, the guest operating system works, just not as smoothly as it does with the tools.
