Configuring USB Devices

PCs and other computers in the 1980s had many ways to connect storage and interface devices. Printers were initially connected through parallel ports. Serial ports connected modems for communications. Other connectors were available for keyboards and mice. There was even a special port for a joystick to play games. None of them were compatible with each other in form or often function. In 1994, a number of PC-related companies including IBM, Microsoft, and Intel began to work on a unified way to connect these external devices.
