Chapter Five Voice Training
WHY “VOICE”? I use the word voice because it’s a word that describes communication and expression, but implicit in that is also a sense of uniqueness. Writers use the word to describe their own unique style of writing, and it fits equally well here. After all, writing isn’t vocal expression any more than photography is. Photography is graphic—using symbols and conventions of language instead of verbal words—but the word voice still works. So I use the word metaphorically to describe the means by which we translate our vision—which is an invisible, internal thing—into the outer, visible thing: the print. Voice is that bridge. It’s more than our tools; it’s how and why we choose to wield those tools.
