It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Elegir gráficos para elaborar informes sigue siendo una cuestión compleja. Se han escrito docenas de libros sobre este tema, se han recopilado catálogos de visualizaciones y se han elaborado esquemas (los llamados selectores de gráficos) para sugerir qué gráfico elegir para tus datos. Sin embargo, lo que parece correcto en teoría puede parecer poco atractivo, desproporcionado o simplemente desagradable para el cliente del informe cuando se aplica a los datos reales. En tales casos, las buenas prácticas ceden ante la opinión subjetiva o las plantillas conocidas. No basta con remitirse al "libro correcto"; tienes que convencer a tus usuarios de por qué un gráfico determinado transmite mejor el significado de los datos.
Y hay otra cuestión. Para los verdaderos analistas, la forma más comprensible de presentar los datos es mediante tablas. Los analistas están profundamente inmersos en el significado de los datos y no necesitan gráficos. Quizá también te hayas encontrado en una situación en la que no te importa el formato de los datos -sea un gráfico de barras, un gráfico circular o una tabla-, siempre que el director deje de molestarte con sus "bonitas imágenes".
