Treemap es un tipo de visualización que se utiliza para mostrar datos jerárquicos de forma más estructurada que los gráficos circulares o de rosquilla. En un mapa de árbol se utilizan rectángulos en lugar de sectores. Un mapa de árbol utiliza el espacio de forma más eficiente y da cabida a un mayor número de elementos. El mapa de árbol de la Figura 5-1 ilustra la estructura de ventas por subcategorías.

Pero, ¿qué tiene esto que ver con los árboles? Originalmente, este método de visualización se aplicaba a datos jerárquicos, estructurados en forma de árbol. Cada rama de este "árbol lógico" se representa mediante un rectángulo, que luego se divide en rectángulos más pequeños para representar las subramas. Al final del capítulo anterior, recomendamos no rellenar el campo Detalles de un gráfico circular porque sobrecargaba el gráfico de información, como se muestra en la Figura 4-9. Sin embargo, un gráfico de árbol es más adecuado para este tipo de datos. En la Figura 5-2, puedes ver que aproximadamente dos tercios de las ventas están relacionadas con los accesorios, y proporciona información sobre la cuota de cada subcategoría.
