Consumer Electronics Devices

Mobile phones are a subcategory of Consumer Electronic Devices (CED). Other members of the CED family include:

  • Digital tablets (such as the Apple iPad, Samsung Galaxy, Motorola Xoom, and so on)
  • Personal digital assistants or PDAs
  • Digital music players (such as Apple iPod, Microsoft Zune, and so on)
  • Internet televisions (ITVs or NetTVs)
  • Gaming consoles (Microsoft Xbox, Sony PlayStation, and so on)
  • Set-top boxes or STBs
  • Automotive navigation systems

That is, any electronic device that has some form of computing capability and runs software is a member of this family. Some CED members are able to connect to the Internet while others are not. Connected device is the subclass of CED that is capable of connecting to the Internet. For example, Galaxy and iPad are both connected devices.

In the remainder of this chapter, we delve deeper into the technical details of mobile operating systems and common mobile technologies to connect to the Internet, browse the Web, and engage in m-commerce. In addition, we explore how to architect a secure end-to-end m-commerce solution.
