On November 3, 2023, Elon Musk said, “AI will mean no one has to work.” Was that just hyperbole or is it the direction we’re heading? The latest “Future of Jobs Report 2023” from the World Economic Forum indicates that by 2027, 43 percent of work tasks will be handled by machines.1
Yuval Noah Harari, historian and author of Sapiens and Homo Deus, has predicted the rise of the “useless class.” He envisions a future where we’ll see the ascent of “a massive new unworking class: people devoid of any economic, political or even artistic value, who contribute nothing to the prosperity, power and glory of society. This ‘useless class’ will not merely be unemployed—it will be unemployable.”2
This all feels a bit … bleak.
