On my way to a talk in Chicago, I did what I always do in an Uber—chat with the driver. You’ll rarely find me in quiet mode on these rides. I’m naturally curious and these excursions are research-rich environments. I’ve had hundreds of conversations with rideshare drivers in countries around the world about how and why they got into this profession. Their stories are always enlightening, often surprising, and never boring.
