book treats manga like a “philosophy,” not like

a “genre” full of children with large heads and

eyes like watermelons.

In any case, this is a book that needs to be

discovered bit by bit. In my case, I was sur-

prised to find a level of abstraction and conci-

sion common among Japanese artists which

contrasts with the much more extrovert (and

literal) replies of western artists. Some of the

Japanese artists included in this book did not

even reply to some of the questions: they just

told us to “look at the picture” and you just

have to get on with it. I must say that some
