Chapter 11. Tooling
This chapter unmasks a frequently overlooked agent of IT dysfunction: tooling. It describes how the toolchain and access landscape can affect collaboration. Organizational agility thrives on unscripted collaboration (Section 3.4.5). Designing for unscripted collaboration is one of the key themes of this book. It needs unfettered access to tools and information. We’ll uncover toolchain-induced silos and ways to mitigate them in general. We’ll also counter the argument that silos are a people problem wherein tools play no part. Finally, we’ll see how tool evaluations done right can help increase adoption and limit proliferation of different tools for the same job.
