Preface

Enterprise IT has mostly underperformed. It’s been a struggle to deliver IT-as-enabler, to say nothing of IT-as-differentiator. Partly as a result, it is common to hear of strained relationships between business and IT. This doesn’t augur well for digital transformation initiatives. I submit that a prime reason for the sorry state of affairs is poor organization design. A June 2014 McKinsey Global Survey1 also bears this out. It found at larger companies that structural issues are viewed as the top hurdle to meeting digital goals.
