COLOR THEORY

When I first went back to illustration and painting, some years after art school, I had a big color block. I didn’t trust or believe in my own taste. While painting, I was always thinking, “Do these colors fit together? Is it tasteful? Isn’t orange and pink a forbidden match?” and so on. I worked in black and white at first, with a bit of blue at best. What sadness! It took me months before I was able to slowly allow myself to play with colors.

I hope you won’t make the same mistake and are able to jump without fear into the beautiful range of colors that gouache paint offers. The best advice I can give is to trust the fun you’re having while painting. Do you like that bright ultramarine blue (my favorite!) or that bold and eccentric ...
