1章APIの概念
APIとはApplication Programming Interfaceの略である。本書ではネットワークベースのAPIに着目する。APIの歴史をさかのぼるとともに、本書で扱うAPIの概要を紹介する。そして、それぞれのAPIをスタイルという観点から比較する。
APIスタイルの違いだけでなく、すべてのネットワークベースのAPIに共通する概念についても探求する。APIが作成される理由について、製品化や収益化などの観点から学ぶ。APIを作成するためのSDLC（ソフトウェア開発ライフサイクル）のプロセス、そしてガバナンスと管理についても解説する。これらの要素を理解すれば、読者のニーズに一致するAPIを選択するのに役立つだろう。
本書で扱う具体的なAPIを探る前に、まずAPIという概念とその歴史について見てみよう。
1.1 APIとは
Application Programming Interfaceでのインターフェースという言葉は、エンティティ同士がコミュニケーションを行う接点を指す。エンティティとはユーザーやシステムあるいは組織などを指す。
図1-1はエンティティ間のインターフェースの例を示している。この画像はレコード盤と針の電子顕微鏡写真である。針はレコード盤の表面に接している。レコード盤に刻まれた溝は、音波の物理的表現である。レコード盤が動くと、針は溝にとどまりながらも力を受け、その効果が音として聞こえる。
