In der ersten Phase der Bereitstellung eines Rechners wird ihm automatisch eine IP-Adresse zugewiesen und die Bootstrap-Datei des Betriebssystems installiert. Die am häufigsten verwendete Technologie, die dafür verwendet, heißt Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) und wurde als Teil des größeren offenen Industriestandards Wired for Management (WfM) eingeführt. Zu letzterem gehörte auch der bekannte Wake-on-LAN (WoL) Standard. WfM wurde 1998 durch das Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IMPI) ersetzt.
