In diesem Kapitel bewerten wir Virtualisierungstechnologien auf einer grundlegenden Ebene. Obwohl virtualisierte IT-Infrastrukturen beim Stapeln einzelner kleiner bis mittelgroßer Anwendungen gut skalieren, erfordert die Skalierung virtueller Compute-Cluster und verteilter Systeme besondere Aufmerksamkeit.
Wir beginnen mit der Computervirtualisierung, d.h. dem Betrieb virtueller Maschinen (VMs) auf einem Hypervisor wie KVM oder VMware. Dies ist der grundlegendste und am besten definierte Baustein einer virtualisierten Infrastruktur. (Neben der Virtualisierung auf Hypervisoren ist die Containerisierung eine aufstrebende und für Unternehmen relevante Technologie; wir behandeln sie in Kapitel 15).
Noch wichtiger für unsere Diskussion über Hadoop in der Cloud ist das Thema der Speicherung, das wir als Nächstes betrachten. Das bedeutet, dass Speichergeräte in Container abstrahiert werden, die zentral in entfernten Speicher-Arrays auf Basis von SAN- oder Objektspeichertechnologien gehostet werden.
Die dritte Ebene der Virtualisierung ist die Netzwerkvirtualisierung, die auch als Software Defined Networks (SDN) bezeichnet wird. Wie wir noch sehen werden, bestimmt die Wahl der Virtualisierungsmechanismen das Lebenszyklusmodell deiner Cluster in der Cloud.
