In Chapter 16 David Huber gives an overview of MIDI technology, including MIDI sequencing software and MIDI time code.
MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It is not a means of carrying digital audio as a signal. It is a technology, and a very well worked-out and robust technology, for sending instructions to synthesizers, samplers and drum machines by transmitting short digital codes, which typically mean something like “ play this note on synthesizer 2 at this volume. ” Such a command is transmitted in only three bytes, which allows incredible economy compared with encoding and transmitting the actual musical event as sampled audio.
