A Performance Testing and Tuning Example

In this section, we will discuss performance testing and tuning techniques in the context of a real-world application. Our example will be focused on an application called The Global Auction Management System (GAMS). GAMS is a WebLogic application representing an online auction where

  • Guests can browse for items by category, keyword, and whether or not it is a featured item. They can also view the existing bids for an item.

  • Guests can register so that they can place items for sale and bid on items as well.

  • Sellers can list items for sale. They are charged a listing fee and a selling fee.

  • Buyers can bid on items until an auction ends. At auction's end, the buyer with the highest bid is awarded the item.
