Abstract

Nanocomposites are one the most important and widely used engineered materials in the field of nanotechnology. Naturally occurring biological nanocomposites are highly inspiring for their unique mechanical properties with light weight. Wood, nacre, spider silk, teeth, bones, etc. are few examples where unique arrangement of nanomaterials in matrices provide synergistic properties of composite materials. A deep insight in bioinspired material helps to produce high performance engineered nanocomposites. Nowadays, the green nanocomposites are attractive due to their low cost, lightweight, biocompatible and environment-friendly nature. Plants are the main source of green composite material. Selection of proper synthesis technique to mix nanofibrils in biodegradable polymer matrices is one of the important criteria to achieve improved properties in nanocomposites. This chapter provides the recent advancements in bioinspired nanocomposites that are used in various sectors like biomedical, packaging, electronics, durable goods, etc. These nanocomposites possess much improved properties in terms of mechanical, thermal, barrier, and many more as compared to previously used natural or synthetic polymers. Cellulose, the most common natural polymer from plant origin has been used for production ...
