This phenomenon of spillover of electrons from a saturated pixel to the adja-
cent pixels is called blooming and appears as a white streak or blob in the
image. Thus, blooming affects both quantitative and qualitative imaging
characteristics. Some CCDs are designed with antiblooming (AB) structures.
AB structures bleed off any excess charge into a specically designed sink
before they can overow to the adjacent pixel and thereby stop blooming.
AB provision is useful when one has to observe targets with large dynamic
