It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Alerting
Like with any monitoring solution, Splunk also has alert functionalities. It can be configured to set an alert based on any real-time or historical search patterns. These alert queries can be run periodically and automatically, and alerts can be triggered on the results of these real-time or historical queries.
You can base your Splunk alerts on a wide range of threshold- and trend-based situations, such as conditions, critical server or application errors, or threshold amounts of resource utilizations.
