In systemd, units are objects that systemd knows how to manage and operate. They represent different system resources and they are defined using configuration files called unit files. These unit files are are kept in the /usr/lib/systemd/system/ directory by default. Only those units whose unit files are stored in the /lib/systemd/system directory can be started or stopped during a session. These files are installed in the system by the application's RPM files. Units are the replacement of old init scripts that were used before CentOS 7.
