A connection in the context of nmcli is a collection of settings or configurations used to store a state of device. A single device can have multiple connections, however only one connection may be active at one time.
For example, a DHCP configuration of the network interface can be stored in one connection and a static configuration of the network interface can be stored in another state. This helps in switching connections rapidly, without changing the configuration manually every time. Connection is also popularly known as connection profile.
