Chapter 1, “Introduction to Frame Relay,” introduced the basic Frame Relay Local Management Interface (LMI) protocols. LMI is a set of specifications that provides a standard connection status signaling mechanism for Frame Relay devices. With the basic LMI protocols, different statuses—such as network congestion, creation of new switched virtual circuits (SVCs), and polling of virtual circuit (VC) connection status—can be actively exchanged between Frame Relay devices in a Frame Relay network. For this reason, LMI has become imperative to the proper operation and monitoring of Frame Relay circuits in Frame Relay networks.
