17.12. Different Types of Algae Cultures for Biodiesel Production

Microalgae can be cultivated in different cultures according to the algae species and the purpose of cultivation. Microalgae cultures include cultivation in open ponds, closed ponds, photobioreactors, desert-based algae cultivation, waste water, marine algae cultivation, and cultivation next to power plants.

17.12.1. Cultivation in Open Pond

Algae can be cultivated in open ponds for large-scale production of biodiesel. The most commonly used systems include shallow big ponds (Fig. 17.6A), circular ponds, and raceway ponds (Fig. 17.6B). One of the major advantages of open ponds is that they are easier to construct and operate than most closed systems.
