Tools for Successful Recovery
As part of your recovery toolkit, you should keep a few things close by. Although you will use most of the tools examined in this section, some (such as a digital camera) may be highly optional.
Virus Scanner
Without a doubt, you should be protecting your desktop machine with a good virus scanner. In some cases, the virus scanner may also check for viruses in your files. One preferred virus scanner is Kaspersky available from www.kapersky.com, but you may use whatever you like. However, ensure that you get a reputable commercial virus scanner versus using a free one.
NMAP
Network mapper (NMAP) is a free open source utility used for network exploration or security auditing. NMAP is a vital tool for you to know about; it is available from www.insecure.org.
Asking for permission from your host before scanning your site with this or other tools is customary (and sometimes required). Your rights to use this may vary in your state, province, or country. Check your local laws before performing any tests with NMAP. Always ask for permission before scanning any site that does not belong to you. Never assume that it's okay.
NMAP produces lots of information about your site, and can help pinpoint problems such as open ports, out-of-date software that is (in some cases) vulnerable, and more.
