Source Control and Self-Control

The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin. When all is orderly, he does not forget that disorder may come. Thus his person is not endangered, and his States and all their clans are preserved.

No master jeweler crafts an exquisite diamond necklace and then leaves it in an unlocked workshop where it could be stolen by a passing thief. When a car manufacturer brings a new model to market, it doesn’t instantly forget how to support and service the old models. Both would be professional (and financial) suicide, reckless attitudes toward valuable work.
