When the Brazilian iron ore company Vale won the take-over battle to buy the International Nickel Company (INCO) in Canada for $19bn in 2006, it created what was then the world’s second largest mining company. It seemed a great coup for the formerly state-owned Vale and evidence of the power of emerging BRIC economies. But the acquisition was only the start of many years of strikes and bitter wrangling that are a case study of the difficulties of leading and driving change across different organizational and national cultures.
