While VGG was the runner-up in the ImageNet 2014 challenge, GoogLeNet, also known as inception, was the winning submission. It has 22 layers in total with no fully-connected layer at all. One of the primary contributions of inception was its hugely reduced parameter set of 5M from 60M in AlexNet. Though the number of parameters is reduced, it is computationally more expensive than any of its predecessor networks. The GoogLeNet Inception architecture figure illustrates this architecture:
