As good as built-in pop-up flashes are, they have some limitations. They’re attached to your camera and shoot directly ahead at a constant angle. You can't tilt or swivel them. Longer lenses sometimes get in the way and cast shadows. An external flash mounts to the top of your camera and solves these problems along with adding other impressive features. In doing so, an external flash opens a world of other creative lighting possibilities.
Although the built-in flash is certainly better than nothing, if you're interested in upping your game and using an external flash, this chapter is for you. I show you what an external flash looks like, what the parts are, and how to attach and remove it from your camera.
