Fueling up a gasoline-powered automobile only seems simple because you’ve spent your entire life doing it, or at least your entire life since you first got behind the wheel of a car. In that lifetime of experience of fueling up, you’ve usually had three options to consider when pulling up to the pump: regular, plus, and premium.

Can you guess how many options you need to consider when fueling up with electricity?

Yep. The answer is also three, and to keep things even simpler, the three levels of charging are referred to as — wait for it — Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3.

Here’s where the gasoline analogy ends. Gas “levels” describe the octane rating — more or less the quality of the fuel. EV charging levels, on the other hand, describe how fast the fuel is added to the “tank.” Electricity is electricity, after all, and really the only aspect worth considering for the EV driver is how and where that electricity comes from, ...
