In Steven Spielberg’s 2002 futurist thriller Minority Report, we see Tom Cruise frantically walking through a mall attempting to avoid recognition and capture. As he pushes past the crowds, the multimedia animated ads call out to him by name beckoning him to take a vacation, drink a Guinness, or buy a new Lexus. Upon entering the Gap, a holographic greeter welcomes him by name and asks how: “How did the tank tops work out for you?” As he wanders through the store, we hear the greeter ask every new customer how they enjoyed their previous purchases, in a perky, enthusiastic tone clearly aimed at enticing customers into more purchases.
