INDUSTRIAL WASTES: ORIGIN, CHARACTERISTICS AND TREATMENT

As discussed in Chapter 5, it is practically impossible to generalise the characteristics of industrial wastewaters even for the same type of industries due to different operating practices adopted. It can be easily stated that there are ‘N’ type of wastewaters from ‘N’ number of industries. This fact leads us to understand the importance of identifying the sources of wastewater in the manufacturing process and or have in depth information about the probable characteristics of each process prior to arrive at possible treatment train. This chapter focuses on these aspects which are very important to satisfy the effluent discharge limits.
