Software is the sequence of instructions that tell the computer what to do. Each complete software sequence is called a program. (Short chunks of programs are called subroutines.) There are programs for all kinds of applications. Examples include word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, payroll, and graphic design.
Programmers write the application programs. Various high-level software languages help programmers create the instructions. The languages are specialized to fit the application areas.
Electronic Design Automation programs form an entire class of applications. EDA has languages to help define and create IC designs and test patterns.
