The most interesting material in the area of system software is that which accompanies certain vendor products. In fact, you can often judge the quality of a vendor’s product by the quality and care with which the documentation is prepared. A visit to a vendor’s website may sometimes reward you with a first-rate presentation of the theoretical basis for their products. Two of the best vendor websites at this writing are those of IBM and Sun: www.software.ibm.com and java.sun.com. If you persevere, undoubtedly, you will find others.
Hall’s (1994) book on client-server systems provides an excellent introduction to client-server theory. It explores a number of products that were popular when the book was written.
