Ever tried to monitor the total at the bottom of your spreadsheet while entering data in the top? It’s like trying to watch your fuel gauge from the trunk. The Watch Window floats above Excel, showing the current value of any watched cell.

History of the Feature

I am not really sure when the Watch Window debuted in Excel. There was a separate VBA feature that was also called a Watch Window and it existed way back in 2003. The Watch Window is here in Chapter 22 because many sources on the Internet say it is new in 2013. But Mike Girvin and I have a 2011 podcast where we used it.

Using the Watch Window

To display the Watch Window, click the icon in the Formula Auditing group of the Formulas tab.
