Galleries that depend on sales for their income have usually exhibited work they might expect to sell perhaps at the expense of a coherent and reflective account of my own preoccupations. Exhibitions in Japan for example have shown prints selected for their market and my exhibition at the British Council in Abuja, Nigeria though a ‘documentary of the problems of that country’ permitted no ‘negative’ images.
