2Image Segmentation

Image segmentation is the first step of image analysis and is necessary for obtaining analysis results from objects in an image. In image segmentation, an image is divided into its constituent parts and those parts of interest (objects) are extracted for further analysis.

The sections of this chapter are arranged as follows:

Section 2.1 gives a formal definition of image segmentation. The image segmentation techniques are classified according to the definition. The classification methods presented here are general and essential and provide the foundation for the subsequent sections.
