After image segmentation, different object regions are detected in the image. Given a specific object region, or a group of object regions, it is often necessary to quantify some of its properties. This task, based on certain suitable data structures (for representation), using appropriate schemes (for description) and with a number of quantitative values (of feature measurements), constitutes one of the basic steps in object analysis and is henceforth called object characterization. This chapter concentrates on the representation and description of objects.
