Abstract: This chapter reviews the development of research on cultural differences in verbal communication. Progressing from a philosophical stage to a theoretical stage, then to a practical stage, the research efforts have generated a great number of important findings. This chapter discusses Boasian linguistic philosophy along with Whorf-Sapir hypotheses, cross-cultural studies done by anthropologist Edward T.
