ICMP Query Messages

ICMP query messages are used to probe the network for specific characteristics (such as host availability and network latency) and are also used for some general purpose lookup services (such as locating routers). A variety of ICMP query messages exist (as described later in Section 5.2.2.2), although each of these messages have their own special requirements and treatments. However, all ICMP query messages share some fields, and these fields are described in the next section.
