If you were to look at all of the ICMP traffic crossing your network, you would probably be surprised at the amount that gets generated and exchanged during a normal day. This is not necessarily a bad thing, since ICMP is what keeps IP working so well. Most web sites will experience a significant amount of Path MTU Discovery messages, for example. In addition, sites that move services around on different hosts frequently will see a lot of Destination Unreachable messages, as clients attempt to connect to relocated services.
