13.2. IP Storage for Remote Applications
Most modern enterprise networks have metropolitan, regional, or global network segments. Remote offices and regions may be serviced through dedicated leased lines, shared MAN or WAN services, or via VPNs on the Internet. Existing MAN and WAN links are usually based on Gigabit Ethernet (MAN) or IP over WAN transports such as point to point, frame relay, or ATM. This existing infrastructure enables storage applications to extend beyond the data center, either leveraging current links (when bandwidth and security allow) or by using the same MAN and WAN services to establish new links for storage traffic.
