The Wi-Fi iTunes Store

It's freaky but true: The iPhone lets you shop Apple's iTunes Store, browsing, buying, and downloading songs wirelessly. Any songs you buy ($1 each) get auto-synced back to your computer's copy of iTunes when you get home. Whenever you hear somebody mention a buy-worthy song, for example, you can have it within a minute. It's instant gratification gone wild.

You can access the store only when you're on a Wi-Fi network—not over AT&T's cellular network. To begin, tap iTunes on the Home screen. The icons at the bottom of the screen include these browsing and searching tools:

  • Featured. These are the songs and albums that Apple is plugging. Buttons at the top include New Releases and Genres, where you can burrow into the featured music by type (Rock, Hip-Hop, and so on).

  • Top Tens. Let the wisdom of the masses guide you. These are lists of the most popular (most-purchased) music on the store right now, organized by genre—and within each genre, by album or song.

  • Search. Tap in the Search box to make the keyboard appear. Type in the name of a song, performer, or album, and marvel as the phone builds the list of matches as you type each letter. At any time, you can stop typing and tap the name of a match to see its details.

All of these tools eventually take you to a list of songs. Tap a song's name to hear an instant 30-second preview (tap again to stop). Tap the price button to buy the song or album (and tap BUY NOW to confirm). Enter your iTunes account password, if ...
