Patterns in Multi-Threaded

Work

The previous chapter considered anomaly r esponse as one of the major

forms of work in JCSs (another is modifying plans in progress). The

patterns in anomaly response r eveal an interm ingled s et of dynamic

processes ( Figure 11). As a general form of work, the cognitive task

synthesis of anomaly response points out more general classes of demand

factors that influence JCSs at work. Wh en studying a JCS, investigator s

can bring these patterns to bear to facilitate the converging studies in

functional synthesis. Th ese general demand factors include tempo,

esca lation, coupling, prematur e narrowing, reframing, dilemmas, and

over-simplifications.
