Adapting to New Technology
New technology transforms roles , judgments , vulnerab ilities, relationships as
people adapt to exploit capabilities and workaround complex itie s. The ne w
artifacts represent new forms of activ ity w ith new requirements for support to
meet the new or changed demands on practice. Here is an example from NASA
mission contro l following a n ew round of computerization that provided new
display capabilities and some new automation for monitoring syst ems on the sp ace
shuttle. The case was captured compactly for us, when a reflective prac titioner
(the section manager who was also an experi enced practitioner) shared his
exam ination of the impact of th e new sys tems on operations with his staff.
